12-10-11 Thursday 179 days – 30 miles today – From Comfort Inn to sleeping with Giants – This place is getting crowded with Bicyclist and Weeds harvesters?
Heading out after a wonderful night and full of waffels for breakfast
The country side changes a litte to some farming in the valleys
Back to heading south
v Easy riding along the flats
This big hawk dropped down in the median next to me a scored a mouse – A few minutes ago he flew over my head and landed in the tree next to me.
Lots of lumber and logs – The mill looks like it is only half in use though.
Stopped by here for lunch My Dads funeral and Uncle Loyld in Loomis, Ca and the Grange Hall for the party after.
Looking up the Eel river
into the trees and looking up
Another one of those things, different from what I thought . I thought the Environmentalists since the 60’s were the ones to start saving the forests – Turns out these Rich Folks from 1918 started setting aside and protecting the old growth redwoods. According to one sign at the Rockefeller Park In the 1930 he donated 2 million dollars and purchased over 10 percent of the totaled of the now save old growth Redwoods. There is a partially hidden bronze plate near the entrance to the J. Smith Redwood park in commemoration of the Daughter of the American Revolution purchasing that park in 1908 with donations from the large lumber mills at the time. There have been good people with their own money doing good things long before the government environmentalist started to with someone else’s money.
Need to add some cars and stuff to give a perspective of size.
I am at the top of a good down hill into the Avenue of the Giants section of highway. Cool
Of course the Sun came out for me and really feels good.
Then we come out to a clearing to see the river.
Into Humbolt Redwoods State Park early to camp in the Hiker Biker section.
The other fellow in the camp. Kinda of a bicyclist journey fellow He is going north to look for a place to stay for awhile – perhaps Portland, Ore. He told me the jobless folks around are up for workThe other fellow in the camp. Kinda of a bicyclist journey fellow He is going north to look for a place to stay for awhile – perhaps Portland, Ore. He told me the jobless folks around are up for work cutting weeds. I thought at first he ment on the side of the road with weed eaters. Then it hit me they are cutting weed for smoking and selling. This is California.
