- Another one of those things, different from what I thought . I thought the Environmentalists since the 60’s were the ones to start saving the forests – Turns out these Rich Folks from 1918 started setting aside and protecting the old growth redwoods. According to one sign at the Rockefeller Park In the 1930 he donated 2 million dollars and purchased over 10 percent of the totaled of the now save old growth Redwoods. There is a partially hidden bronze plate near the entrance to the J. Smith Redwood park in commemoration of the Daughter of the American Revolution purchasing that park in 1908 with donations from the large lumber mills at the time. There have been good people with their own money doing good things long before the government environmentalist started to with someone else’s money.
