12-05-10 Thursday 101 days 30 miles – Good people – great lunch and short miles then a cold night

: Great morning and quiet away from the highway

: Pigeon release – was a great time talking with this fellow from the Caldwell area of Idaho

: Turned off on a Interpative and found a Pigeon racer realeasing birds for a 350 mile training run. Reminded me of the 10years raised and raced pidgeons in Lubbock Tx. Hard to keep doing that when you move. The Birds keep going home to where they hatched.

: It is spring time in valley – spent a few hours at a cafe uploading the last few days photos eating more Hamburger fries and pie alamode good day so far

: a few miles out of Jordan Valley this fellow Gordon and his 14 yr old son stopped to talk awhile. They are 3rd generation Ranchers and have about 17,000 acres. His son is a great kid.

: Although Gordon invited me for the night I pressed on and end up making 30miles on the day.

12-05-09 Wednesday 100 days of bike riding – 38 miles Another Good day not too fast and a number of interesting places

: Just to remind us someone else has lost a loved one and we are here only a little while and then in the next eternity.

: Before getting to Rome a fellow taking a nap in his pickup woke up and gave me some fruit, a bag of corn nuts and we talked for 45 min. He is on his way to Boise from Whitter, calif. He kept remarking how

: Shirley I made to Rome sooner than I thought. another unexpected service – couild not resist a great 6.00 a real homemade hamburger and fires

: Now I didn’t notice the hill before I ate lunch, now I feel a little deserving notice truck on upper left of road.

: and the name of this river is named after a Hawaii native who was killed by indians in the area.

: Any excuse to rest is better than just being tired – spent 15min trying to get one of these birds just going into the holes they made lower one look close.

: A great view back from part way up while resting again.

: cool place along the highway 2 cars stopped to talk one here and another young lady who saw me last week on here way to LA. both wished me a Good Life and my GOD Bless them too.

: So Lewis and Clark came this way and now Michael Fox has too.

: so this is where all the crested wheat comes from around all the sage brush. Enviromentalist probable would do this kinda of stuff today, supprised they have proposed takeing it back to the way Lewis and Clarke saw it or before. OH By the way the Crested wheat grass was imported from Russia, today would be considered an invasive weed. Things just change – not to worry they keep on changing

12-05-08 Tuesday 99 days 52 miles As is usually the case the anticipated desolation is not as desolate as the reality.

: The traffic is medium and very courteous leaving me lots of room.

: when they said no service they ment fuel and food, water makes this trip a whole lot different now.

: After 37 miles this is the place for a nap and plenty of water. i am liking this desolate section of Oregon 95 – in order to live here you have to work for the highway dept.

: Off to the west there is lots of snow maybe the source of much of the water.

: they did try smooth out some of the hills

: In case you were wondering here is what the rocks in the cut out look like

: It was not all down, and the breeze is from the south, nice.

: some was quite steep this was into and out of Crooked creek.

: Jerry said look for hot springs to soak in – I did not see any locals to ask – so just look down this road.

: Didn’t find a hot spring – did find a camping spot after a 51 mile day thanks God.

: Least you think I am wasting away – Nothing like a photo to set you reality – no wonder people give me money, food and point me toward the nearest homeless shelter. This puts your ego in perspective.

12-05-07 Monday 98 days 38 miles – a day for wildlife in valley of Northern Nevada

: The valley side is irrigated with lots of green looks cool.

: Where there is no farming it is sage brush and grass and rocks

: How about that the cows in Nevada follow me just like the in Texas This group started a stampeed for about a half mile picking up about 30 cows.

: Today it wild life day – I was resting in the shade of a road side mail box yep just a mail box and saw this coyote going down the road He turned see if this was a road runner he could catch.

: Still having lunch – I see what the coyote was looking to have for lunch after he left these fellows starting poping up to look around.

: I found out later this is irrigation canal weed control

: Haven’t seen many of these in Nevada – either there are less wrecks or less memorials.

: Yes the Horses act the same here too.

: Into another state Oregon – This south east part is a lot different than around the UofO in Eugene, Or.

: Supposedly this is the next services on this section of road. Jordon Valley next stop, got an extra gallon of water just in case and figure 2 days maybe 2 half.

12-05-06 Sunday 97 days 18 miles – catch up to Winnemucca, at the top of a hill.

: he trike is loaded up for the catchup ride to the other side of Winnemucca, NV the top of a hill.

: The new church near Louise’s house – we left from there

: Louise after she has dropped me off on the top of a 5 mile down hill – Thank you Louise.

: The little community of Orovada Looks like lots of this type of country side

: Bit of a head wind – so time to wrap up the flags Still pretty flat in the valley

: the mountains to the east kept the view interesting.

: First nights camp in the morning – only peddeled 18 miles today. still a wonderful day with the drive with my sister Louise.

12-05-04 and 05 Friday and Saturday – R&R at Louise and Kirbys in Fernly, NV

Louise and Kirby’s house – they have really fixed it up nice and we had a great visit.
Kirby has a good start on the gardening now that the Russian Olive tree is gone.

12-05-03 Thursday – Resting, visiting, and Great Basin Bike shop

Oh Boy!!! The gears are replaced. Talked with ICE trike folks in England this morn for info on Capreo Rear Cassette and Kirby drove me to Great Basin Bicycles -Where Martin Sanford came up with a way to get the gear cassette off and replace the Shimano Capreo Gears that were worn. Back at Kirby’s house he ordered the right tool to be sent to his daughter(my niece) Amy’s house in Idaho.

Going to enjoy visiting Louise and Kirby for a few more days before taking a jump start to the top of the pass near Winnemucca, NV.

12-5-02 Wednesday 96 days 49.5 miles Great day riding into Fallon, NV

: About 5 miles ahead was Schertz, NV an oaises in the valley on the way to Fallon, NV

: The little town has one Indian quick gas and market where I got some coffee and water – the next few pictures show why no one carved out more of the reservation.

: There is lots of water here in the irrigation ditches

: The shoulder of the highway was unusable for my trike most of the way and the The Trucks all were friendly and gave me lots of room when they passed.

: Some more Desert Wild life along the road – I almost ran over this fellow.

: Of course if I had hit him I probable would have tipped over.

: This might be some Native American art works in the desert or not.

: Even out here along the shoulder – Nature triumphs over man

: Part of the Indian reservation for the last 125 years that hasn’t changed much.

: Looking back on the last 12 mile upgrade, sure miss my two medium gears that are worn and skipping

: Coming into Fallon, NV the green valley – lots of Alfalfa and mellon fields.

: Resting at the Subway waiting for my sister Louise to meet me and take me to her and Kirby’s home for a visit. A wonderful 49,.5 mile day.

12-5-01 Tuesday 95 days The road into and out of Hawthorne, NV most interesting and a good day

: Morning in the High Desert

: Rolling toward Hawthorn – the wind is calm this time of morning

: f you want to keep Naval Underwater Weapons research out of the way this is the place, go to the desert.

: The Hawthorn Museum – where me and Grandkids had been last year

: Walker Lake as heading out of Hawthorn, NV

: The shoulders are not very usuable with the rumble strips dug into them. One some of the upgrades there is a curb to use

: The views of Walker Lake are really cool and the highway is 22 miles along the edge.

12-4-30 94 days Monday Getting back into the groove and the desert

: Nice camp after 51 miles yesterday after church. good down hills and some tail winds.

: It seem every mountain has been explored for minerals – silver, gold, etc. A fellow in Goldfield told Shirley and I Nevada ranks 6th in the world for Gold production.

: more long road and it is still this fellow on the Trike.

: he views just keep changing and is a speacial beauty.

: Mina – supplies Cheetos and water.

: one way to get the traffic to slow and buy something.

: Actually this is an issue along this Highway – Hawthorne is a US Navy weapons stoarge area.

: No supplies in Luning – A couple of people told me there is not enough help who will work to keep little places open.

: Slowly moving along you get to see more of the country side differences and beauty.

: Some times the unique and interesting features are unfolding above our heads.

: The head wind the last 10 miles did me in as well as a little upgrade – Time to pull it over and crash on the side of the road.
